Donald Woods is appointed editor of the Daily Dispatch - the youngest editor in South Africa at the time. He serves as Editor until his banning in 1977. His firm anti-apartheid stance led to many clashes with government ministers and the security police, but during Woods’ 13 years as editor, circulation rose from 18,000 to 33,000 and the newspaper also became one of the most successful in the country. During his reign as editor, he either sued or was prosecuted on 13 separate occasions and was successful each time.
