Madwaleni Network - Hospital
Madwaleni Hospital and its eight feeder clinics are an inspiring example of how the community and a team of dedicated nurses, doctors and programme staff can work together to deliver life-saving services in one of the very poorest parts of the country, where many communities suffer around 89% unemployment.
The hospital and clinics at Xhora, Hobeni, Melitafa, Soga, Nkanya, Bomvana, Mqhele and Vukukhanye are set in deeply rural Bomvanaland, the Xhora district of Mbashe in the Eastern Cape.
One of the most exciting developments at Madwaleni is the Department of Health initiative to rebuild vital sections of Madwaleni Hospital, through the hospital revitalisation programme. This overdue requirement will have an immense impact from day one on the 150,000 people who live in the area.
Some of the most notable achievements and successes in recent years include:
- the increase in doctor and allied health capacity of the hospital
- the birth and growth of an inspiring rehabilitation department
- building seven community health education centres to support HIV, TB and OVC
- providing services for orphans & vulnerable children with the Dept of Social Development
- our ability to now provide home based care to our chronically ill or palliative stable patients
- the establishment of a site for medical students as part of formal undergraduate curriculum
- the development of a model HIV wellness and ARV programme
- testing over 1000 people per month for HIV (over 33,000 so far)
