Mandela~Biko~Woods Trail
Retracing footsteps is an enthralling way to experience some of the imprints made by historical figures left to mark moments in history during earlier times of immense significance or turmoil.
- This project is designed to promote some of the rich heritage the region has produced over the years as well as to highlight some key people in the Eastern Cape’s political history, initially through landmarks in the lives of Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko and Donald Woods.
- To enhance this, we have also included details of the region’s most pioneering family over the centuries – the Soga family, featuring Tiyo Soga, sons William Anderson Soga, John Henderson Soga, Allan Kirkland Soga and grandson Dr Lex Soga.
- The trail begins in East London in the Eastern Cape, continues along the Buffalo River to KingWilliamstown, further into the Amathole region, and east to Mbashe and surrounding areas.
- The Foundation has conducted parts of this tour for two groups to date, but aims to host all the major components of the tour as a Donald Woods Foundation event for those wishing to take part in an interactive educational holiday integrating with the Foundation’s programmes in the process.
- If you are part of a group that would like to participate in the tour guided by the Donald Woods Foundation, please email Mandela-Biko-Woods-Trail@donaldwoods.org . Tour groups can be from anywhere in the world, though the language of the tour is English.
